slow reading [sləu ri:diη]
<photogr.> a thorough analysis of photographs and their context.
ICON aims to thoroughly analyse the photographic image. Casual glances and hasty surveys, which often characterise our modern times, do not do justice to individual photographs. Images can bear witness in a way that cannot always be translated into words; they are able to uncover the prevailing view and current mentality and thus tell us something about the construction of our social environment. For this reason, ICON advocates slow reading of the photographic image, not merely in art photography, but also in genres that are often easily ignored, such as personal, amateur and advertising photography.
